Comments: I decided to add a run on to the day. Hiking is nice, but it doesn't necessarily train the aerobic systems unless done very fast. This run was pretty enjoyable, a little colder than I expected, even in the upper 40s. Route was determined by avoiding slush as much as possible. It felt truly enjoyable to start running. I think I even said something like "oh, yeah" as I headed out. I really felt like I would be more gassed after the hike. I did feel weirdly stiff headed uphill, and my hamstrings were a little tight headed downhill.
