Trip Reports

I needed, needed a place to document my hiking adventures. I want to make sure I'm not doing crazy, reckless things in the mountains. Or, at least I want to convince myself I'm not. Writing everything down seems to be a good sanity check. I enjoy writing a lot more when it's for an audience. So we are gonna make all these journals public. Hopefully I'm brave enough to share my mistakes, and not just my victories. Sometimes I hike with my girlfriend, sometimes I hike with my dog, and sometimes I hike with other friends. But I most enjoy hiking by myself. That's where the best writing comes from, anyway. Enjoy!

Back at the Matterhorn Creek Trailhead, I hopped in my beat-up Civic and headed down the “4WD recommended” road, taking care not to scrape my undercarriage on a large rock. I’m a pretty good rocky-road driver know that I’ve had to sherpa my little coupe up to so many trailheads. I’m sure my car would complain, if it could talk. Unsure, if I had slept at all, various memories of insane nonsensical alpine dreams reassured me that sleep had crept in. I ate my breakfast and got dressed inside my tent out of a desire for coziness. I prayed ... [Read more]

Currently laying in my tent, just above 12,000 feet... Well, I certainly came here with a plan. I also did my best to sabotage my plan in small, (ultimately insignificant) ways. Let's back up to the beginning. This morning I realized that thunderstorms were DEFINITELY happening in the San Juans on Friday, and they would be starting early. I had a two-night trip in mind, but it was clear that wasn't happening ... [Read more]

Do you like scary stories? Well gather 'round the campfire, because I have a haunted trip report to share.Three Halloweens ago, on this very day, near the ghost town of Winfield, Colorado...the mountains gave me a scare. It was not the first time, nor would it be the last. The sun illuminated the basin below Missouri Mountain, rebounding blindingly bright off the immense canvas of white snow. It felt like nothing could go ... [Read more]
